The country is part of the so-called “Lithium Triangle,” together with Argentina and Bolivia—a region that concentrates more than half of the world’s lithium resources. This geological advantage has positioned Chile as one of the leading global producers and a relevant player in emerging supply chains linked to clean energy.
A globally projected industry
The growing demand for batteries for electromobility has increased international interest in South American lithium. Major economies, particularly in Europe, the United States, and Asia, are seeking to secure access to critical minerals to support the development of cleaner energy technologies.
In this context, Chile has promoted a public policy approach aimed at strengthening the development of this industry through its National Lithium Strategy. The initiative seeks to expand the role of the state in resource exploitation, promote public-private partnerships, and move toward greater value addition within the production chain.
The goal is not only to increase production but also to foster technological development and attract new investment related to lithium processing and applications.
Exports and international positioning
Lithium has become a strategic component of Chile’s export portfolio. Alongside copper, wine, fruit, and salmon, it is part of a group of goods that have successfully positioned the country in highly competitive international markets.
Currently, Chilean products reach more than 170 markets worldwide, reflecting the country’s growing integration into global trade.
The rise of lithium also reinforces South America’s role in the global energy transition, particularly given that the region holds some of the largest reserves of critical minerals needed for new technologies.
Challenges for industry development
Despite its potential, lithium development faces significant challenges. These include the need to advance more sustainable extraction processes, balance private investment with state participation, and increase value addition within the country.
Another key challenge is international competition. Other producing countries are expanding their extraction capacity, requiring Chile to consolidate a long-term strategy that combines investment, innovation, and appropriate regulation.
