Starting October 1, 2025, bank customers in Mexico will experience a significant change in the management of electronic transfers. The National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) has amended the General Rules for Banks (Circular Única de Bancos), requiring all banks to implement and enforce the “User Transactional Limit” (MTU).
This measure gives each customer the ability to set a personalized daily transfer limit, applicable to digital transactions such as:
- SPEI (Interbank Electronic Payments)
- CoDi (Digital Collection)
- DIMO
- Service payments
- Credit card payments
What is the MTU?
The MTU is the maximum amount of money you allow yourself to transfer electronically, which you can configure directly in your bank’s app or online platform.
⚠️ Important: If you don’t set your MTU before September 30, 2025, your bank will automatically apply a default daily limit of 1,500 UDIs (≈ $12,800 MXN).
Legal basis
This regulatory change is supported by:
- The CNBV amended the Circular Única de Bancos on August 30, 2025.
- The Law on Credit Institutions establishes security and operational requirements for banks.
- Guidelines from CONDUSEF (Mexico’s National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users), which promotes user protection.

Why does it matter?
- Avoid unnecessary rejections of key payments such as payroll, tuition, or supplier transfers.
- Enhance your financial security by limiting potential exposure to fraud or identity theft.
- Take control of your risk by setting a limit that reflects your financial needs and preferences.
What should you do?
The process is straightforward and takes just a few minutes:
- Log in to your bank’s app or online banking.
- Look for the option “Transfer limit” or “MTU”.
- Set the maximum amount you want to allow (daily, weekly, or monthly).
- Confirm the change using your token or two-factor authentication.
The new MTU represents a step towards a safer and more user-centered banking system. By setting your own limit, you not only protect yourself against fraud but also improve the way you organize and manage your financial operations.
As digital banking continues to expand, proactive measures like the MTU allow individuals and businesses to ensure smoother, safer, and more reliable transactions.
